Africa: oil means blood for blood profits with the EU

1 day 23 hours ago

To protect its oil multinationals, the European Union has no qualms about funding the armies of African dictatorships. Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique, is home to a jihadist guerrilla group that began in 2017 with an attack on police stations in the town of Mocímboa da Praia. The group is made up of young people who have questioned the local population's Islamic practices, deeming them to be non-compliant.

Israel does not want peace!

3 days 3 hours ago

The United States said it could impose a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel. This was declared on 29 November for a period of 60 days. Just long enough for Biden to say that he had ‘done the job' and hand over to Trump at the end of January. An inglorious end to the reign of ‘Genocide Joe', who has spent the entire year supporting, arming and ultimately encouraging Israel's genocidal escalation.

Uruguay: Frente Amplio wins presidential election

4 days 2 hours ago

On Sunday 24 November, the Frente Amplio (FA) won the second round of the presidential elections in Uruguay. The pairing of Yamandú Orsi and Carolina Cosse won 49.8% of the vote against 45.8% for the right-wing Partido Nacional. A clear victory. The coalition-movement, as it statutorily defines itself, won in 5 of the 19 departments, whereas previously it had only won in the 2 largest cities, Montevideo and Canelones. The FA won 16 out of 30 senatorial seats and 48 out of 99 deputy seats.

GE24: Changing of the Mudguard

5 days 2 hours ago

People Before Profit's (PBP) slogan during the election campaign was “End 100 years of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael”. [1] But now we are facing into yet another Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael (FF-FG) government. Why has this happened? Are we stuck in a never-ending Groundhog Day or does hope for radical change remain?

Where is Syria headed?

6 days 4 hours ago

While observing the amazing historical events that unfolded since last Friday, the first thing that came to mind was relief and joy at the images of detainees being freed from the hell of the carceral society that Syria had become under the Assad family's regime. Our feelings were also overwhelmed by delight at the sight of Syrian families suddenly able to return from nearby exile, whether from another area within Syria or from Jordan, Lebanon or Turkey, to visit the towns and homes they were forced to flee from years ago. Add to this that the dream of millions of Syrian refugees, in the countries surrounding Syria and in Europe, of returning to their homeland, even if only for a visit, this dream that looked impossible a few days ago, has begun to seem achievable.

Assassination of Insurance Executive Brings Little Sympathy but Much Criticism of Health Insurance Companies

6 days 20 hours ago

In the early morning of December 4, a man with a pistol assassinated Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest corporations in the world which was holding a meeting for investors in New York City. Police found shell casings marked with the words “depose,” “delay,” and “deny,” words often used by the health insurance industry when rejecting patients' claims. The shooter left a backpack in Central Park, found by the police, containing nothing but Monopoly game money, another implicit criticism of the industry.

A fraud too far in Mozambique

1 week 1 day ago

Mozambique, a Portuguese-speaking country in southern Africa, is used to cyclones, but it's experiencing a completely different storm. The storm was caused by the mass mobilisation against electoral fraud at the general elections on 9 October. While the authorities declared the victory as president of Daniel Chapo, the candidate of the ruling Frelimo party, with 71% of the vote, Venâncio Mondlane, the main opponent with 20% of the vote, is contesting the results. The mobilisations reflect a desire for change, but the opposition is far from representing a political alternative that will serve the people.

Put an end to Macron and the Fifth Republic!

1 week 4 days ago

After the vote of no confidence, let's finish with Macron and the 5th Republic!

The result was clear: 331 votes in favour of the no confidence motion. The Barnier government resigned and the austerity budget law fell. This illegitimate government, a symbol of Macron's decomposition of the Macron presidency, had no future. The promise of ever more austerity and authoritarianism has been rejected by the vast majority of the population.

What is happening in Syria?

1 week 6 days ago

In just a few days, after having remained relatively static for a few years, Syria has turned anew into a theatre of war of movement, in what looks like a resumption of the last major displacement of the battlefronts that took place in 2016, when the Assad regime regained control of Aleppo with Iranian and Russian support and Turkish complicity. Here we are now, facing a surprise attack accompanied by a sudden expansion of the forces of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (Organization for the Liberation of al-Sham, i.e. Syria, commonly referred to by its Arabic acronym HTS), the Salafi jihadist group that has controlled the Idlib region in northwestern Syria since 2017.

Trump Confrontation with Mexico over Tariffs, Migration, and Drugs

As a candidate, Donald Trump threatened to put a 25% tariff on Mexican goods entering the United States and to close the Mexico-U.S. border, both actions that could have devastating consequences for Mexico and perhaps the United States as well. “This Tariff,” he wrote a few weeks ago, “will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!”
